This past weekend, we received two request for help from other Thoroughbred rescue/adoption organizations.
I received this message from Pam Berg of GEVA:
After further inquiries, I found out the horse's name is Comedy is Magic, a 4 year old colt by Comic Strip. The rehab farm was willing to reduce their rate down to $360 a month. Pam said another local group was able to send $100 to help. After reviewing our budget and recent donations, I figured we could help with the remaining $260 for this month.
Pam is VERY grateful for our help! She wrote back to say:
Shortly after that, I received a message from Caroline Betts of the newly formed Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue:
She send a message a little while later that she received some private donations totaling $500. Again, I looked at our budget, and we had received a number of donations following the Triple Crown series, so I responded that we could help out with the remaining $300.
She responded with EXTREME GRATITUDE that The Exceller Fund could help make this possible!

Please enjoy the photos of this handsome boy. Without your support - NONE of this could happen!

I received this message from Pam Berg of GEVA:
There's a horse that needs help. He's got a fractured femur (GGF) and is laying up at (a local rehab farm in Northern California.) They want to ship him to Idaho to race and the horse still needs a few months before he can resume any work.
I'm full at the farm here, but can't take on any horses since a horse fell on me and I'm in a cast and crutches with a broken leg.
This horse does not need to ship to Idaho and certainly doesn't need to return to the track. Can Exceller Fund help at all?

Thanks so much for your help. Comedy will stay in good hands with Brenda.
Send me whatever form I need to complete. I would prefer that the check be made payable and sent to the farm directly. I'm forwarding this letter to Brenda, so she can contact you with details.
This will certainly help buy some time to find the little guy a good home off the track. We'll take it one week at a time.
Shortly after that, I received a message from Caroline Betts of the newly formed Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue:
Hi everyone,
I am in a bind and asking for help.
Last night I learned of a 4yo gelding by In Excess, "Noble Gambler", who is available free of charge to the first person to pick him up at Hollywood Park. Noble Gambler has only raced twice, and is currently on the CHRB vet's list after suffering a low bow in a race a few days ago. He was claimed in that race by Art Sherman, who is the trainer looking to give him away. I spoke to Sherman this morning, and I need to let him know asap whether I can take the horse. They are all moving to Del Mar on Monday, so the horse has to be gone at the latest by Monday morning. Others have shown interest.
I have started a thread on ABR asking if anyone wants to take this horse in. Noone has stepped up, and time is running out. The rehab on the low bow (and I don't know for sure that the suspensory isn't implicated also) is 6-8 months, and the horse will need to be handwalked and cold hosed/iced daily for a while right away. Does anyone here know someone that could help this horse?
My own situation is this. I am willing to take him in, and have three foster homes that could accept him. However, Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue - although now a CA non-profit - does not yet have 501(c)(3) status, and I have not yet established any funds to support additional horses (except my own funds, which are supporting six other TB rescues currently).
Heck, I'm still figuring out my BOD! I cannot take him in unless I have feed costs for at least his six month rehab committed (roughly $750, and probably more), and donations are not tax deductible. I'd buy him an ice boot to help out the foster, and pay an initial vet evaluation, but I cannot in good conscience take in another horse without significant support.
So - 1) anyone know someone looking for an injured racehorse? (ha,ha) He is reportedly a large, good looking horse and his race replay suggests that also. 2) anyone willing to donate even a small amount to support his feed for six months?
My friend Larry is on his way to check the horse over at Hollywood Park right now. I'll update when I hear from him.
Time is very very short. I asked Sherman to let me know right away if someone else picks up the horse. Advice?
Best,
Caroline
