Dear Members,
Here is a quick update!
UPDATE ON HORSES!
Devil’s Dust has arrived at New Vocations where he will be up for adoption under their program. Devil’s Dust was donated to us by his trainer who wanted this 9 year old “warhorse” to find a good home. New Vocations will let us know when he has been adopted and will forward a copy of the updates to us.
We have a private foster interested in working with Eleanor’s Gift. EG is the 17 hand chestnut gelding who has laminitis in one foot. The foster has a farrier experienced with trimming to help correct the rotation, so fingers are crossed for this guy. He is not the easiest horse to handle and is very difficult to catch out in the field, but the foster is patient and is willing to work “one on one” with EG. We are hoping to finalize those plans by month end.
We are also working on moving Trois Villes to a foster stable in Lexington where Niki Smith can more closely monitor his progress. He is another 17 hand chestnut gelding (we have a total of 3!) that had a bad suspensory injury last year. He has had a lot of time off to heal, and now we start the process of evaluating his potential for a new career. We are also working on finalizing transport by month end.
I am waiting to hear from another vet for an opinion on the radiographs for Rambling Affair. We will need to make a decision soon for him. He is not comfortable now, and we don’t know if surgery will help. The initial estimate for surgery is around $2,300 which is not an amount we can cover without jeopardizing the funds we need to pay for basic care for all of our other horses. This will be a very touch decision, so I am waiting to hear on the second opinions.
TOAST TO EXCELLER DAY
Leslie Hubbell mailed out a letter, bookmark and order form for our Toast to Exceller Day. If you did not receive your letter, it means we do not have a current address for you! So please contact me and update me on where you are at these days!
I have attached the order form for the limited edition hats, visors and earbands for those who may have misplaced the letter, or did not receive it, and would like to order. Leslie is also getting black silicone bracelets with Exceller and a gold cup debossed in a gold/brass color and I will let you know when those are available. The price on the bracelets will be $5.00 each.
I am sending a letter and e-mail to the folks at Bacardi who own Gray Goose vodka to see if they would be interested in helping sponsor our signature drink. We have a winning recipe, and if you want to know what it is – please e-mail me! We are going to call the drink “ The Exceller” – keeping it simple to honor this great horse.
The Toast to Exceller Day will be on September 27, 2008? That day will be the 30th running of the Jockey Club Gold Cup since Exceller defeated two Triple Crown winners in a single race. It is an accomplishment that had never happened before, and I doubt could ever happen again. Exceller’s victory is also a celebration of the wonderful teamwork of Trainer Charlie Whittingham, Jockey Bill Shoemaker, and of course – Exceller.
While Exceller never won a division championship, and his legacy as a sire is largely overlooked, every horse that has benefited from The Exceller Fund, either directly in our program, or assisted with funds donated to us, or simply networked by volunteers for us – is a continuing legacy for Exceller. Creating the living legacy to honor Exceller was the impetus behind the creation of The Exceller Fund.
We are hoping to get a number of racetracks on board with this idea. We can use help in contacting tracks and presenting the idea, so if you would like to be a part of this effort, please e-mail mail@excellerfund.org !!!

Updates and communication
This is an area where, quite frankly, I struggle. I can use help in keeping our list of members current, with current e-mail address and contact information. I can also use help in getting a newsletter out on a more regular basis. Please – if you can help out in this area, let me know!!! Contact mail@excellerfund.org
I found a new webmaster who will start working on updates to our new site in July. If anyone would like to help in getting update information to our new webmaster, please feel free to volunteer!!!
Sponsorships
I am waiting for grant checks from Blue Horse Charities and Thoroughbred Charities of America. A few other grant requests have been sent, but I have not heard back from them. Currently, we are paying more in expenses than we have incoming donations. One way to help that situation out is to see if we find additional sponsors for some of our “long term” guys such as Eye Pea Oh, Dah Waterboy, Ton of Gold, Prospector Sally (he’s at the therapy program but we still need to cover his expenses for feed, vet and farrier), Winds of Summer, Franchised and Franconia. We have a partial sponsor for Gifford’s Kid and can use more people to sponsor this sweetheart.
Initially The Exceller Fund membership was to be a part sponsor in all of our horses, but with the current economic climate, the cost of fuel, the cost of hay and grain, our adoptions are slow this year, and we need an additional “boost”. I welcome ideas and volunteers to help with a sponsorship program that will involve getting more frequent updates and photos from our fosters and communicating that to the sponsors as well as our membership.
Membership!
Please don’t forget to send in your donations! I know that with Summer now arriving, vacations are coming and it’s easy to miss. So this is a reminder to please be sure you send your donations to help support our horses!
