You have all heard about the plans The Exceller Fund has to promote a Toast To Exceller day on the Jockey Club Gold Cup 30th Anniversary of Exceller's victory over both Seattle Slew and Affirmed.
That victory still stands as a unique achievement in North American Racing - one horse defeating two Triple Crown winners in a single race. That had never happened before, and it seems highly unlikely that it will ever happen again.
We contacted NRYA last month about our plans to have a Toast to Exceller day complete with a Signature Drink to be sold to help raise money for efforts to help Thoroughbreds find new homes when their racing or breeding careers are over.
So now check out this story in the Times Union:

Announcing the Toast to Travers cocktail contest!
If you replaced the word “Exceller” with the word “Travers”, the promotion is almost word for word the promotion that we proposed to them. They declined the offer because they didn't want to "draw attention to Exceller's story on JCGC Day." So imagine my surprise and disappointment (I have a much stronger word in mind) to see the idea completely lifted for something else. And I don't think for one minute that The Exceller Fund will see one bloody penny from this.
Our volunteers have spent considerable time, resources and personal funds get our Toast To Exceller event moving forward to now see their idea apparently being plagiarized NYRA.
It was one thing for NYRA to politely decline accommodating the event, but it is quite another for NYRA to use the idea for their own purpose and profit, thereby diluting our ability to raise much needed funds for transitioning Thoroughbreds from the racetrack to a future that does not involve a captive bolt.
Disappointment is a mild word to describe my feelings towards seeing a major fundraising event derailed by a major racing circuit.
