So another Triple Crown series has come and gone, and the days seem to be flying by once again.
I know I have not sent out an update in a long time, and you have my sincere apologies! If anyone would like to help keep me on track for updates, please let me know - you can send an e-mail to mail@excellerfund.org. What would be involved? Well - I can call you with some of the latest things going on, and you can keep track, and I can send you some photos and e-mails as we go along, and then twice a month, help me put the information together to post on this board and send out an e-mail to everyone. If someone has html talent that can make a cool newsletter, that would be even better!
So - on to what's been going on with The Exceller Fund!
ADOPTED!
Firstdowntouchdown has been adopted! This little guy came from the Fingerlakes Track in New York and wound up with a dealer who was going to take him to auction. A kind person sent us funds to secure his safety, and after the first foster home did not work out, we sent him to Lisa at Triple L Stables. He has been adopted and the new owner is boarding him at Triple L. Here are some photos of "Touchy" and his new "mom and dad."
NEW HORSES!
We took in a few new horses from trainers at the Mountaineer Racetrack. Some of you may have seen the HBO Special about Mountaineer that followed horses from the track to the Sugarcreek Auction that were then sent to slaughter. The Exceller Fund was not involved in that special, but we have been quietly work "behind the scenes" so-to-speak with volunteer Rachel Paris in building trust and respect among some the trainers to consider better alternatives for horses whose racing careers are over.
Here are some of the horses that we have taken in:
DEVILS DUST
1999 bay gelding - By Holy Mountain out of Stuttering Sarah by Norcliffe. (Holy Mountain is by Devil's Bag!)
51 Starts, 11 Wins, 6 Places, 7 Shows Career Earnings: $191,622
This 9 year old gelding was done racing, and the trainer wanted to make sure he went to a good home. This trainer had a bad experience with someone who wanted a "free" horse, and that horse wound up in a bad situation, so he asked if we could take him.
Currently, the horse is relaxing in the pasture with other horses at Kevin Chumney's farm in Ohio. We contacted New Vocations in Ohio, and they will take him and find him a good adoptive home.
Dr Zi
2000 chestnut gelding (recently)
By Parade Marshal out of Porti Bay (by Potrillazo) (Argentine bred)
71 Starts, 4 Wins, 12 Places, 12 Shows Career Earnings: $58,194
We received an e-mail from a trainer asking us to please consider taking this horse before the owner could have him sent to auction. The Fans of Barbaro sent in donations to secure him, and he is also at Kevin's farm in Ohio.
We have since received some promising adoption inquiries and we hope to have him in a new home by mid-summer. For now, Dr. Zi is relaxing and learning how to socialize with other horses as he had only recently been gelded.
GARCON DUKE
2005 chestnut gelding By Garcon Rouge out of Miduchess (by Big Pistol)
1 Starts, M Wins, 0 Places, 0 Shows Career Earnings: $131
This 3 year old gelding was simply not cut out to be a racehorse. He doesn't have the prettiest head, but has a very sweet personality. We acquired him from the trainer as an alternative to seeing him sent to the Sugarcreek Auction. Angel Acres Horse Haven in Maryland had an opening, and we sent him there so he can find a new adoptive home.
Rambling Affair
2005 chestnut gelding by RSVP Please out of Obeah Ramble
The trainer thought this little guy had a knee chip, and he offered to donate him. The Fans of Barbaro have offered to help support. Radiographs were taken, and it looks like this little guy has a displaced condylar fracture and the prognosis may not be good. Rachel Paris is trying to get some other opinions from surgeons. In the meantime, the foster provider is keeping him comfortable. If we cannot keep him pain free, we will give him a dignified end.
The Update will be continued in the next post of this thread.
