I am going to start this update on this thread, and work on it until I get all of the news up to date. Then I will post a 2007 Year In Review for all of you.
I think you can be very proud of what The Exceller Fund was able to do in 2007, and I say this because none of this would be possible without your support!
In the meantime, this post will be a "Work in Progress" as I go through e-mails and notes and invoices to let you know all that we have been up to!
NEW HORES!
Continuation
Last year, this 3 year old gelding (now 4!) was in real danger. After suffering a non-displaced slab fracture while racing in Oklahoma, he was in danger of being sent to the local low-end sale where kill buyers pick up cast out horses.
Continuation is by Maria's Mon out of Forever Maisie (by Carson City!) and was bred by Pin Oak Stud. Leslie Hubble found out about this horse, and she and Diane Baker made contacts with Mrs. Abercrombie who sent in a check large enough to cover the first 6 month's of care for this beautiful young horse.
He is being fostered by Circle E Ranch in Stroud, Oklahoma. They also foster horses for the TRF. Diana Baker will keep Mrs. Abercrombie apprised of any additional needs or time for this guy. When fully recovered, he should make a very nice horse for someone. Leslie says he is a dream to work with.
Bryan's Account
2002 bay gelding Unaccounted For - Mystic Music (by Stop The Music)
Bryan's Account was another horse that had been at the Mountaineer Racetrack. His racing days were over, but this gorgeous gelding had no place to go. The Fans of Barbaro sent money to another rescue to take him, but they funds weren't coming in fast enough to pay the trainer. The Exceller Fund sent the $300 to the trainer with the understanding that the other rescue would refund the money when the donations had been received.
The refund never materialized, and a few months later concerns were raised about the care that Bryan received. With the help of Stephanie Ferraro of Celtic Rein Equine Rescue & Sanctuary as well as Rachel Paris, we were able to pick up Bryan and he is now in the expert hands of Stephanie at Celtic Rein in Maryland.
Bryan is doing great and we hope that he will be adopted very soon!

Sash
No photo available yet. This mare was rescued from potentially going to slaughter. She has been donated to The Exceller Fund and is being sponsored by the person who rescued her. Sash is at Ann Lear's farm in Virginia. Ann also fosters horses for the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation. This was a joint effort involving Diana Baker and Christy S from Another Chance4Horses.
ADOPTED!!!
Midnite Ruckus has been adopted by a wonderful lady in Lexington Kentucky. The woman has a gelding from the same family and thinks the world of him. She was excited to find "Ruckus".
I got this e-mail update last month from Ruckus' new mom:
Carson City Kid was also adopted in late 2007 by a wonderful lady in Indiana. The adopter's nephew happened to be the veterinarian for the foster provider, and she is also well known by the folks at Friends of Ferdinand. She could not be happier, or a prouder "mom" about her "Kid."
Friends of Ferdinand (FFI) did not charge us for any of the foster care or vet expenses. At the time that the adoption was being finalized, FFI was coordinating efforts to make sure horses at the Hoosier Park paddock sale would not be in danger of going to kill buyers. As recognition for their huge part in making the Carson City Kid story a happy ending, and to continue with our ideas about leveraging with other rescue groups, we donated 1/2 of Carson's adoption fee back to FFI, and they used that money to rescue another Thoroughbred!
Enjoy these photos of Carson as he gets introduced into his new home.
Merry Christmas Carson - you're getting a new home!

EMERGENCY FUND - HORSES HELPED
Even though we don't have a huge excess of funds, we still try to help out fellow rescues when we can. Here's a rundown on some of the horses we have helped with Emergency Fund donations:
TAYLOR'S EMBLEM
2004 bay gelding Our Emblem - On The Hook (by Phone Trick)
We received $100 from one of the Fans of Barbaro to help this horse from the Mountaineer racetrack, and we sent a total of $200 to secure this 3 year old (now 4) Thoroughbred so he wouldn't be sent to auction at Sugarcreek. He went to another rescue person in Indiana that a CANTER volunteer knows. Our thanks to the tireless efforts of Rachel Paris who is always looking out for the Thoroughbreds at Mountaineer Racetrack in West Virginia.
I mean, how could you say "No" to this face?

CITY BLUES
2000 chestnut gelding - Carson City - Imia (by Riverman)
This is another 7 (now 8!) year old Thoroughbred gelding at Mountaineer that quickly needed a new home. To top it off, he is also by Carson City! The Fans of Barbaro sent us donations to help, and Rachel Paris found a home with a person in Georgia who takes in a few Thoroughbreds at a time to rehab. For just a mere $300, City Blues was in danger of being sent to Sugarcreek, so we are glad this fellow will now have a new chance "after the finish line."
Another face that you just can't resist!
Mystery Mother
Actually, that is not her real name. We don't know her real name, and may never know because her tattoo is very faded. A volunteer who works with Priscilla at Tranquility Farm went to the low-end auctions in Southern California this past weekend. She had it on good information that pregnant Thoroughbred broodmares would be going through these auctions, and she wanted to save at least one from going to the killer buyers.
We sent $100 to Tranquility to help with this effort. This mare went through the ring with no papers, and only the KB was interested. The volunteer, Caroline, made the winning bid and arranged for this mare to go to Priscilla at Tranquility which is where you see this mare in the photo. Caroline has offered The Exceller Fund members an opportunity to name this mare.
Enjoy the photo and send me suggestions for names!
****UPDATE!!!!!**** We found out who this mare is and you are NOT going to believe this. Please see the update post down below!!!!
When I come back I will update you on our fundraising results in late 2007 which included eBay auctions of the Sing and Alex books signed by various jockeys, the 2008 Fantasy Art Calendar, and our Holiday Horses.

I got this e-mail update last month from Ruckus' new mom:
Midnite is just fine she is really a gentle soul a bit silly at times just acts as if she was treated a bit rough in the past. Doesn't care for mane pulling but that can get worked on and we are going to try a blanket as soon as it comes from Dover as all I had were 84's.
She is sweet, gentle, easy to catch, comes when called, and is great at begging carrots. When I am ready to start riding her there will be a nice fenced in ring to start with and she should be fine she has settled in well and I am sure she will be fine at the new barn. Even better it will be mine. I will try to get some pictures on a nice weekend and email to you she has put on some weight and her coat is getting soft to touch. Doug will check her feet out next time he is out. and she has been wormed. I'll keep you posted.

Rachel Paris sent this update on Taylor:
I just wanted to give an update on Taylor's Emblem the latest Mountaineer Thoroughbred rescued by the FOBs. The people who have him love him and also call him a "gentle giant". It looks like he'll be remaining on their farm and start training after his stall rest/recovery. His knee is doing very well, they see no signs of discomfort (when I loaded him he also didn't take a lame step). They're hoping to use him for their local search and rescue unit, but will determine that in the future depending on him.
