Christmas is right around the corner so we are getting busy with Holiday and year-end Fundraising efforts.
As I mentioned in the other Update threads, we now have 40 HORSES in our program! In order to safely suppor this number and still be able to assist other horses in need, we need to build upon our finances.
Currently, we have about $5,000 a month in board and vet expenses, and can anticipate at least another $1,000 to $1,500 in transport and other miscellaneous horse care costs. At our current level of donations, we can maintain this for about 6 months and then we risk exhausting all of our funds.
In order to meet our expected expenses for 2008, we need to raise an additional $25,000 on top of our current level of membership donations and support.
We are conducting the following efforts for fundraising to help meet that goal:
HOLIDAY HORSES
Nicole Smith will be spearheading our Holiday Horses fundraiser this year. For those of you not familiar with it, Holiday Horses are Holiday cards that feature a photograph of Exceller on the front of the card, and a photo of an Exceller Fund horse on the inside. The message in the card conveys Holiday greetings and lets the recepient know that a donation has been made to The Exceller Fund in their honor.
Holiday Horse donations can be made at several levels:
$20 - buys food for a week for a horse
$30 - buys basic medical care for a month
$50 - new shoes
$150 - sponsors a retiree for a full month
Here are examples of past Holiday Horses cards.
The order is for one card at a time, and you can order them to send to your friends and family that share your love for these magnificent horses. You can also consider hinting to your friends and family that you would like one of these as a gift. Holiday Horses orders for Exceller Fund members will count as donations in our Member Donation Challenge!
The order form and link for credit card orders will be posted very soon on our website. If you would like me to e-mail the order form to you right away, please send an e-mail to mail@excellerfund.org - subject line HOLIDAY HORSES.
MEMBER DONATION CHALLENGE
Loretta Tarnowski and Sandra Warren both gave me the inspiration to run another Member Donation challenge this year.
Loretta Tarnowski and her husband have suffered some tremendous medical and financial setbacks, and it breaks Loretta's heart that she cannot do more for these horses. I ask any member that can offer prayers, please include Loretta and her husband in them. She is facing a very serious situation as her insurance will not cover all of her medical expenses which have been adding up to quite a bit these days. If anyone would like to contact Loretta, you can send an e-mail to mail@excellerfund.org and I will forward your message.
Loretta has still found ways to help these horses, and offers this item as one of two prizes for the members that can bring in the most donations:
This is a Blue Blanket throw, measuring 60"x38" that was a giveaway item at Monmouth Park in honor of the Breeders Cup.
Our other prize is a piece of history from Santa Anita. This year, Santa Anita replaced their dirt track with a new synthetic "Cushion" track. The dirt from the old track was used to creat an acrylic paperweight that contains a sample of the old dirt track and the notation that some of the greatest horses in American racing ran on this track. Horses such as Seabiscuit, Swaps, Affirmed, Spectacular Bid, Tiznow and so on.
Sandra Warren opens this competition with a $100 donation that was sent to The Exceller Fund by a friend or family member in lieu of a birthday gift. (Happy Birthday Sandra!) The competition will run through the end of December. The member that has the largest dollar amount of donations contributed in their honor will get to choose from these two prizes. The member with the second largest dollar amount of donations will receive the remaining item. In case of a tie, we will decide using virtual "rock, paper, scissors" or a coin toss.
The donations can be made by check, PayPal and Credit Card. For donations made by check, the donor should write "In honor of (your name)" on the memo line so we know who its for. With PayPal, they should be able to indicate your name on the PayPal notation, or they can forward their PayPal acknowledgement by e-mail to mail@excellerfund.org and indicate your name in their e-mail. If paying by credit card in our on-line shop, they would forward their acknowledgment e-mail to mail@excellerfund.org and indicate your name.
I'll post updates to the competition so you know where you stand!

Please check out these current auctions that are being held for us through eBay's Giving Works/Mission Fish program. There are some wonderful photos of Breeders Cup winners with 100% designated to The Exceller Fund!

Loretta has also sent me a Fred Stone print of John Henry signed by the artist. We will be offering this on eBay to honor John's great legacy by using the funds to help his fellow Thoroughbreds that might not live to see a second career or retirement. I will be putting up this auction very soon, so be sure to tell your friends and fellow racing fans and horse lovers!
Here is an image of the print:
I will also be putting up a Chris McCarron signed bobblehead doll, as well as a Bob Baffert Bobblehead, a Seabiscuit bobblehead, and other items that I have.
THOROUGHBRED FANTASY ART - 2008 CALENDAR
Artist Pat DeLong is again dedicating the sales of her Fantasy Art Calendar to The Exceller Fund. I bought this calendar last year and love, love, love looking at the beautiful images each month.
Here is a link to her 2007 Calendar so you can get an idea. She will be posting the new 2008 Calendar as soon as they are available!
