NEW HORSES!!!!
The Exceller Fund has acquired SIX(!) more horses since our last update, and we have one horse returning from adoption.
CARSON CITY KID
1994 Bay gelding - by Carson City - Classy And Quick (by LeFabuleux)
119 Starts, 15 Wins, 18 Places, 17 Shows Career Earnings: $310,105
This venerable gelding has raced at some of the most prestigious tracks in the country in the course of his 10 year racing career - Hollywood Park, Del Mar, Keeneland, and Churchill to name a few. He picked up a number of fans along the way who became quite worried when he struggled in his last few races in Fargo, North Dakota. It was evident the 13 year old gelding was done with racing, but his owner did not have the proper facility to retire him.
These fans rallied together and contacted Leslie Hubbel who then contacted us to see about giving this guy a well deserved retirement. Messages were posted on the Alex Brown Forum to see if the Fans of Barbaro would contribute. Pledges came in from the "FOB's" as well as donations from other fans and one of his former trainers.
Leslie Hubbel coordinated the discussion with the owner who was considering an offer of $1,000 from people who would use "Kid" for Chuck Wagon Racing which can be a bit too much for a Thoroughbred with 118 races already under his belt.
The owner accepted an offer of $800, and arrangements were made to transport him to a foster facility near Indianapolis run under the auspices of Friends of Ferdinand. Sara Busbice of FFI was more than happy to help us after we had helped them with Cheersto Glory last year.
Carson has settled into his foster home and already has people interested in adopting him. He has a very loving personality and is overcoming some track soreness and hoof issues. Here is a photo and a heartwarming video of Carson City Kid.
Exceller Fund members note - He is by Carson City who also sired a horse we have sponsored for quite a while at United Pegasus -Sierra City!

FUNNY BOY
2003 bay colt - by Solo Chorus out of So Funny (by Ruthie's Native)
4 Starts, 1 Wins, 2 Places, 1 Shows Career Earnings: $15,580
This beautiful dark bay colt was on his way to auction when we received a committment from someone to send the funds to pay for him and keep him so he can be gelded, recoved and then adopted. The person that committed the funds has already been approved as an adopter, so this beautiful (soon-to-be-gelding) will have a home very soon!
We acquired him in the beginning of October. He stayed in in New York until the end of the month when we sent him to Kentucky for the winter. Shortly after his arrival, he was gelded with the surgery donated by Hagyard Equine Clinic in Lexington. He is at Claybank Farm and will soon be fully evaluated.
Long time Exceller Fund members will recognize his broodmare sire - Ruthie's Native - as the sire of our very own Ruthie's Glimmer who is one of the first horses to be saved by The Exceller Fund way back in January 1998!
Here are some photos of this beautiful boy!
ELEANOR'S GIFT
2001 Chestnut gelding: by My Boy Adam out of Classy A by Dancing Czar.
31 Starts, 3 Wins, 3 Places, 2 Shows Career Earnings: $57,369
This very handsome 17 hand chestnut was brought to our attention back in April. He had one start left at the track (Mountaineer) and would soon need a home. We made a committment to the trainer to take him. In the meantime, another trainer leased him and set him on a pattern of workouts, extending his stay at the track. Eventually, EG started in a race and finished out of the money, so in mid-September Kevin Chumney picked him up for us. EG joins his fellow 17 hand chestnut ex-Mountaineer buddy Trois Villes at Kevin Chumney's farm in Salem Ohio.
He is a little "track sour" and needs time to adjust to simply being a horse. He has wind puffs and ocelets so he can use a few months of rest before we can evaluate him as an adoption prospect.
Here are some photos of this big beautiful chestnut.
FAX A FREDDY
Cutlass Fax - Honey Bee Pink (by Honey Jay)
1997 Chestnut Gelding - 77 starts - 14 wins, 17 place, 8 show -- Career Earnings $399,583 - Ohio state-bred 3 year old of the Year in 2000!
This 10 year old "war horse" gelding was retired by CANTER Ohio form Thistledown in August 2007. CANTER needed to find a more affordable long-term retirement situation, so we agreed to have him transfered to The Exceller Fund with CANTER Ohio sponsoring 1/2 of his board. He spent a short time in Lexington before being transported, with his buddy Pal Joey, to our foster Diane at Rocking T Ranch in Barnsdall, Oklahoma.
PAL JOEY
Gilded Time - Kooky Aunt Alice (by Silver Buck)
1995 dark bay gelding - 118 starts, 15 win, 16 place, 18 show -- Career Earnings $447,668 victories include the Legal Justice Stakes and Worthingon Stakes
In December 2005, this veteren gelding was purchased by CANTER Ohio to ehsure he received a well deserved retirement. CANTER asked if he could be transferred to The Exceller Fund with CANTER sponsoring half of his care. He joins his buddy, Fax A Freddy, in the large pastures of Rocking T Ranch in Barnsdall, Oklahoma. There, he joins our other Exceller Fund horses Ton of Gold, Prospector Sally, Dah Waterboy, Missy Won, Distant Kid, Winds of Summer, Wild Eye Bill, and Handsome Jolly Jim.
LOVE ME R LEAVE ME
1999 Bay gelding - Friendly Lover out of Ms Jill Z (by Lord Of All)
35 Starts, 5 Wins, 2 Places, 6 Shows Career Earnings: $76,940
You may remember this horse from his hilarious foal photos taken by Barbara Livingston. "Lovey" was donated to The Exceller Fund in late 2005 and was adopted shortly thereafter. His adopter was not able to maintain the adoption and he has come back to us. I am working on getting many updates on our website, and a page and photos of Lovey is at the top of the list!
"Lovey" was transferred to Kentucky and will most like move on to a foster home in North Carolina unless someone snaps up this cutie first! Everyone who meets him falls in love with his easygoing temperament and good looks!
FIRSTDOWNTOUCHDOWN
2003 bay gelding by Belong To Me - Morgans Raider (by Giboulee)
14 Starts, M Wins, 1 Places, 2 Shows Career Earnings: $7,622
This handsome bay gelding last raced at the Fingerlakes Racetrack in New York. He wound up with a dealer who was not able to keep him long. A concerned person contacted us and sent us the funds to acquire him. Originally, we thought we had found someone who would take him as their own horse. However, things did not work out. He did not get along with this person's other horses and she felt he was too aggresive. We are currently in the process of transfering him to Triple L Stable, just a short distance away in central New York so we can get an idea of his issues. Paul Linn may also visit him in the near future to access this horse.
It should be noted that we acquired this gelding about a week after John Henry's passing, and this horse does seem to be channeling a bit of ol' John's temperament. He seems to be very intelligent with a high play drive. The person did say that he liked to pick his feed bucket off the floor everyday and put it in his water bucket.
I will update this with a report and new photos after he arrives at Triple L which should be any day.
This brings us up to the staggering number of 39 horses in our program. Of that number, we have 4 that are being sponsored by their fosters, but we are still responsible for vet and other expenses. The sad part is, every day I receive e-mails of more and more horses that just need a little help to transition from the racetrack to a new career, but we cannot accept responsibility for anymore horses unless we have the ongoing donations and support to match.
We are working on new eBay Auctions as well as a new Holiday Horses Campaign and a fantastic 2008 Thoroughbred Art calendar from artist Pat DeLong to help raise much needed funds. Details on this as well as a Member Donation Challenge will be in a new thread in this Update Section.
