Exceller Fund Update – Activities of May 2007
It’s been another very busy month for The Exceller Fund and everyone who works with us to provide a future for these wonderful Thoroughbreds. In this update we will cover 2 adoptions, 3 new horses, horses that have been moved, new members, and we will be asking you, our dear members, for your input on a number of issues and ideas.
ADOPTED!!!!!
SULLY’S SILVER
Can you believe our dear Sully has found a forever home? As you know, Sully has endeared himself to everyone who meets him. He had been racing on a bad knee and ankle and then left with a dealer who knew he could not find a private buyer for this injured horse, but even the dealer felt it would be a shame for such a kind-hearted and stoic horse to go to slaughter.
For almost the last year, Sully has been at Triple L Stable in New York, and almost every weekend he had a visitor by the name of Irene W. who had seen Sully race at Aqueduct. Irene soon fell for Sully and would buy him special treats and such to make sure he was comfy. She also bought him an expensive warm winter blanket to keep him toasty during the bitter winter they had in central New York.
As you know, we had hoped to bring Sully to Virginia for surgery on his knee, but one thing after another kept derailing those plans. Finally, the surgeon who was at the University of Virginia left for a private practice, and then our foster in Virginia was not able to take Sully.
Irene finally took this as a sign that Sully was meant to stay with her and nervously applied to adopt him. Folks, I wish ALL of our adoption applicants were as conscientious as Irene! Irene will keep Sully at Triple L, but will be paying the board for him and visiting him as often as she can. She is not interested in riding, but she loves to groom, and walk and SPOIL her Sully! Lisa Leogrande of Triple L ran into Irene at the tack shop soon after her application was approved. She said Irene had the biggest smile as she was toting an armful of new “stuff” for Sully, halter, flysheet, toys, and so on!
We had received a couple hundred dollars for Sully’s surgery, and we have had at least $800 in vet bills to treat him for an adverse reaction to a banamine shot, and bloodwork to determine if the doses of bute he had been previously given at this former foster home had done damage to his kidneys. The good news is Sully fully recovered from his mishap, and his blood levels and kidney functions have been fine. Sully had been prone to mild colic, but after being put on Performance Products Equine Microbials, all such symptoms have stopped. If you donated for Sully’s surgery, please let me know if we can count those donations toward his existing vet bills, or if we can use the money for vet expenses we will be encountering with some of our newer horses.
FORTY FIVE
This handsome boy almost went to slaughter. Had it not been for the fact that two volunteers were at Mountaineer to pick up Yeager’s Jet and were able to contact us about this horse, and had we not had a few extra dollars in our account to make it happen, Forty Five would have long ago been sent to slaughter. Instead, this handsome son of Gone West was fostered by Celtic Rein Equine Rescue and Sanctuary in Maryland where he won the hearts of everyone who saw him.
Forty Five was no slouch as a racehorse, and in his early years was nominated to the Triple Crown trail in the barn of Todd Pletcher for Dogwood Stables. Over the years, he slipped down the ranks and wound up at Mountaineer with no place else to go. We received a number of inquiries from people interested in adopting Forty Five. Seems that any offspring of Gone West is highly sought after by people for various riding disciplines. He was adopted by Cynthia R. of Maryland who spent hours visiting him and wants him for the horse that he is and not just his pedigree.
HORSES ON THE MOVE
DAH WATERBOY and Missy Won now join Ton of Gold and Prospector’s Sally in Oklahoma. Dah Waterboy had been in Kentucky for almost 2 years with almost no adoption prospects. Waterboy had been adopted a few years back, but tragically his owner died in a car accident and Waterboy came back to us. He has been sound on his old sesemoid injuries that have now healed. He appears to be sound for light riding and there may be some interest in him as a pasture pet/light trail riding horse.
MISSY WON had been at the Blackburn Facility run by the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation. This was not intended to be a permanent home for her since she is an Exceller Fund horse. She had surgery to remove a chip in her ankle, and she also had her ovaries removed to treat a condition that was brought on by hormones. She should also be okay for light riding, and we are hoping to find a new home for her.
I received photos of our horses from Diane Templemeyer, but they are hard copy photos which I need to scan so I can post for all of you to see. I will be working on scanning a backlog of photos!
MIDNITE RUCKUS was initially adopted by someone way up north, but the adopter took an instant dislike to this filly upon her arrival. Apparently “Ruckus” was not tall enough to suit this person’s fancy, and we wound up in a situation where we needed to take her back right away. She is now in foster care up north where she will be evaluated for suitability. All indications are that she will make a nice prospect for dressage or eventing.
We learned a few tough lessons from this situation so hopefully something like this does not happen again.
NEW HORSES
TAKE A CHANCE
I wrote to you about him in our last update and it was quite brief. Take A Chance, a 5 year old gelding, was in training at Santa Anita and suffered a condylar fracture on his right foreleg. His connections were going to euthanize him even though the vet said he has an excellent chance at a full recovery for a new career. A gal at the track pleaded for a little more time to see if she could find a way to pay for the surgery and get him into a program for a new career, and that's how we got involved.
The Fans of Barbaro are coming through with donations to help pay for the costs for surgery which was done about 2 weeks ago. The surgery went very well, and the vet was very pleased with the outcome. About a week after the surgery, the vet discovered “Chance” had an abscess on his left front hoof. He said the abscess was deep and pre-dated the injury. He felt it may have been a contributing factor to the injury. The vet was able to dig out the abscess and so far, everything seems to be going well.
Chance is staying at the track for now, but we are looking to find a foster home for him in Southern California where he can finish his rehab. He is a gorgeous horse and won the Derby Trial stakes at Fairplex as a 3 year old.
You can see his new page on our website at www.excellerfund.org/horses/TakeAChance.htm
EYE PEA OH
Eye Pea Oh is an 11-year-old "warhorse" with a long record of trying his heart out...and a pretty cool name, too! He is a handsome gray (almost white) son of With Approval standing about 16.2hh. Spanning a career that started at Santa Anita with trainer Ron Ellis, Eye Pea Oh retired with 51 starts in which he finished on the board 25 times, with 9 wins and $294,385 in lifetime earnings. His last win was December 19, 2006.
He was brought to the attention of our Vice President, Darlene Robinette who contacted CANTER Ohio since the horse was racing in Ohio. CANTER was able to raise the funds needed to purchase him and transition him into a new life off the track thanks to donations from members of the Exceller Fund and these online forums: Tim Wooley Racing (FOB's), Chronicle of the Horse, Del Mar, and Pedigree Query.
It seems that he came off the track none too soon. He had almost no cartilage left in his ankle and is not a candidate for surgery. There is no telling if he would have broken down in his next few races had he continued. Unfortunately, CANTER is not in a position for long term care, so The Exceller Fund agreed to take him to give him the time needed to heal and see if he can be used for light riding or simply retired to the pasture.
Currently, “Opie” is being cared for by Julie Householder at a foster facility in Lexington. We may move him over to Oklahoma the next time Diane Templemeyer comes to Lexington. Eye Pea Oh was evaluated by the vets at Hagyard Equine Clinic. He is not a candidate for surgery and the vet says to simply allow the joint to fuse.
He certainly is a handsome guy! We may be asking for additional sponsors to join us to support Opie's retirement until we can hopefully find an adoptive home.
THISBIRDCANFLY
This handsome fellow has knees that look like he borrowed them from Seabiscuit! He is a 6 year old bay gelding by Cartwright out of Magic Swan by Acaroid. Unable to race any longer, his next stop would have been the infamous Sugar Creek Auction. Volunteers at the track in West Virginia were able to secure him for $400, and we made arrangements to send him to Lexington, Kentucky with Julie Householder as the foster.
“Birdy” was evaluated by the vets at Hagyard. He has a lot of chips and calcification in his knees, so he is not a candidate for surgery. So far, he moves sound in the stall and in the field, so we will give him more time before evaluating if he can be used for light riding. Our thanks again to the Fans of Barbaro for donating money to help cover our costs to transport him from Mountaineer to Lexington. Due to some delays at the track, our transport cost went up $100 and the FOB’s were able to cover that increase.
He is quite beautiful, so keep your fingers crossed that he can find a “forever” home, even if it is as the worlds most beautiful lawn ornament! We may be asking for additional sponsors to join us to support Birdy's retirement until we can hopefully find an adoptive home.
If any Exceller Fund member is going to be going to Lexington, perhaps to visit the Horse Park or the stud farms, please let me know and I can put you in touch with Julie Householder to go and see the horses we have there. Our member Patty Y. went and had a wonderful time!
UPDATES ON SOME OF OUR EXISTING HORSES
RICH IN DALLAS
I hope everyone was able to enjoy the recent letter we got from “Dallas” and his recent adventure meeting the Governor of Virginia and leading a parade. I have posted the letter in Dallas section on our Message Board. Dallas next appearances will be at the Equine Extravaganza in North Carolina in August, and Virginia in October:

PRO ON THE ROAD
Lily continues to do very well on the Performance Products Equine Microbial supplement. This is a pro-biotic supplement formulated specifically for horses with equine specific strains of bacteria and enzymes. Some of you may remember the Pro On The Road (her barn name used to be Gem, and now it’s Lily) suffered a lot of pain every time she went into heat in the spring and the fall. The worst heat cycles were in the spring. She would kick her stall, act studdish, and even colic during these cycles. Her pain was so bad one year we thought we may have to perform colic surgery. We have received all sorts of advice on how to treat this condition ranging from putting a marble in her uterus, to putting her on Regumate, to removing her ovaries.
Lily has been on the Microbials for about 2 months, and has gone through 2 heat cycles this spring with NONE of her former symptoms! Performance Products donated the supplement to us, www.performancemicrobials.com/Equine.htm , so if any of you have horses that have been prone to colic or other digestive or reproductive issues, call Joe Hoffman at Performance Products, his phone number is on the web-page, and talk to him. Tell him The Exceller Fund sent you!
LUCKYMATA
Lucky is enjoying his retirement! He takes regular mud baths (he LOVES the mud!) and noodles around in the company of his harem in Missouri at Out2Pasture Farm under the watchful eye of Robin Hurst.
ALMATA
Luckymata’s mom continues to do well. Lori Neagle reports that she had to put down Serindipity last week. “Dip” was a very old mare (in her 30’s), but was also Almata’s friend, so Almata has been a little upset over the loss. Fortunately, her buddy Franny is there to keep her company. Both mares continue to do well. And Franconia (“Frankie”) is still the queen of the pasture!
FUNDRAISING
Our Street Cry at auction went very well, bringing in over $100!!!
Currently there is an auction on eBay for a saddle cloth from ill-fated INESPERADO who recently broke down at Golden Gate Fields.

eBay Giving Works
This is an auction that has been listed under the eBay “Giving Works” program where the seller can designate anywhere from 10% to 100% of the auction proceeds to a charity registered with eBay. Note, eBay will refund the seller’s fees in direct proportion to the percentage that is designated to the charity. If a seller designates 10% to the charity, then eBay will refund 10% of the seller’s fees. If the seller designates 50%, then eBay refunds 50% of the seller’s fees. If the seller designates 100%, then eBay refunds 100% of the seller’s fees!!!
MEMBERS – UPDATES AND COMMUNICATIONS
As many of you know, I have struggled these past few years to get our Updates out to all of you in a timely fashion. There is something intimidating about writing an e-mail with all of the current information and links to photos and websites that seems to take a lot longer than it should. Add to that my e-mail program is starting to get bogged down with the sheer volume of e-mails that are stored. Finally, I have had trouble keeping up with new member e-mail addresses, change of e-mail addresses for members, and the fact that aggressive spam and junk mail filters seem to block a lot of the e-mails that I send to a group.
The funny thing is, I have not had a problem posting information on message boards, such as the Tim Wooley Forum. I had always thought of our Updates as information just for our members, until a number of people, including members, have pointed out how silly that is. Everyone needs to be able to know all of the great work that we do.
Therefore, I will now post our Updates on our Members Board at
almata.proboards106.com/index.cgi and I have removed the restriction of having to have a password to view most of the Forums. You still need to register to be able to post, but anyone can now read about our efforts.
I will post more frequent updates to this message board, so please be sure to check back often! I would really like to see our Member Board become a more dynamic place with member interaction, ideas and networking!
I will send out a reminder each month regarding dues as well as a reminder to check the Message Board for updates.
Please let me know what you think about this. You can bookmark this site and check the Message Board anytime you have access to the internet. You do not need to rely on your e-mail to receive the updates.
As a test to see how effective this is, I have horseracing T-shirts available in Medium, Large and X-tra Large. I will send one T-shirt to the first five people who post a response under the May 2007 Update. You must be a current member, and first come, first served on the size.
I will be setting up forums to list opportunities for Volunteering, current status of our expenses and reserve per horse, and also information regarding efforts to stop horse slaughter, and information regarding horses in need.
Speaking of the message boards, Alex Brown of Tim Wooley Racing has set up a “Wiki” site on the Tim Wooley website. We now have an Exceller Fund “Wiki” page which you can go and check out at:
www.timwoolleyracing.com/wiki/index.php/The_Exceller_Fund
