We received $204.80 from the Exceller Birthday Event!!!!
Sunday, May 13, 2007Argh! I can't believe I MISSED sending this out before Exceller's Birthday! Pat has been very gracious and generous with us, so I still encourage you to go to her sight and take a look at some of the beautiful items she has for sale.
It's been a busy week for me, both work and The Exceller Fund. I was going to send this out yesterday, but wound up spending a lot of time with yet another call about a horse in need. This particular horse is in Southern California, and his name is Take A Chance. He has a condylar fracture, and his connections were going to euthanize him even though the vet says he has an excellent chance at a full recovery for a new career. A gal at the track pleaded for a little more time to see if she could find a way to pay for the surgery and get him into a program for a new career, and that's how we got involved.
The Fans of Barbaro are coming through with donations to help pay for the costs for surgery, and I am on my way to the track to see the horse and meet with the gal who has been working hard to save his life. I will fill you in with more detail when I have confirmed everything. In the meantime, I have an Update that I will try to send out tonight.
Happy Birthday Exceller. Yesterday marked the 34th anniversary of Exceller's birthday! And today I wish a warm and wonderful Mother's Day to all the moms out there, both human and equine!

EXCELLER, who in 1978 defeated both AFFIRMED and SEATTLE SLEW in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. He would close out 1978 with 7 stakes victories including the Hollywood Gold Cup and Sunset Handicap. In 1997 he was nominated to the Thoroughbred Racing Hall Of Fame. In that same year, EXCELLER died in a slaughterhouse.
The Exceller Fund was created in memory of EXCELLER to provide funding for the purchase, care, retirement and adoption of Thoroughbreds that might otherwise meet the same fate. Click here to learn more about the Exceller Fund.
Pat DeLong hopes that you will join us on May 12th by making a purchase in the store of $20.00 or more in our quest to donate needed monies to the Exceller Fund.
Also in this issue, we celebrate STREET SENSE, who went from 19th to 1st in this year's renewal of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. HARD SPUN was second in the Run For The Roses and CURLIN ran third.

KENTUCKY DERBY 133
The Run For The Roses
Calvin Borel and STREET SENSE won the $2.2 million Kentucky Derby this past Saturday, the first Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) winner to return at 3 and win the Derby. It marked the first time since Sunny's Halo in 1983 that a horse won the Derby with only two prep races at 3. But trainer Carl Nafzger, who won the 1990 Derby with Unbridled, was supremely confident in his handling of the son of Street Cry.
STREET SENSE was sitting in the 19th position as the horses traveled down the backside. And, Calvin Borel had a plan. What Borel wanted him to do was come off the rail and drive past HARD SPUN. The homebred colt did just that, just about the eighth pole. Down the stretch, STREET SEMSE and HARD SPUN drew off from the rest of the field, with STREET SENSE winning by 2 1/4 lengths. HARD SPUN finished second, and it was another 5 3/4 lengths back to CURLIN. The final time was 2:02.17.
