Dear Members,
Today marks a sad anniversary. According to the article written by Mike Mulanney in the Daily Racing Form, Exceller was killed 10 years ago today. I am disappointed that The Bloodhorse did not run the release considering that this group got its original start on The Bloodhorse forum.
We sent out a press release to all of the racing and equine media just over 10 days ago, but so far, no one has published it. I do hope that the memory of Exceller is not growing dim over time, so if any of you have contacts with the media, please see if you can generate some interest.
To commemorate the death of a champion, we have recently rescued two horses who would have been sent on their way to slaughter. Even though the U.S. slaughterhouses are essentially shut down, horses are still being sent to Canada and Mexico. Both horses are from the Mountaineer racetrack in West Virginia, and we offered the trainers the amount that the horses would have brought at auction at Sugarcreek. This represents a huge step in this area as the Mountaineer racetrack is someone notorious for being unfriendly (and downright hostile) to rescue efforts, so we are glad that at least some trainers are willing to consider an offer.
The two horses are Yeager's Jet, a 4 year old bay gelding by Unbridled Jet out of Like Yesterday (by Allen's Prospect) and Forty Five, a 6 year old dark bay (almost black) gelding by Gone West out of Spray (by Roy).
This was another situation where we literally had hours to figure out where these horses could go, and it was truly a group networking effort. Rachel Paris contacted Darlene Robinette about this situation and was also working with Stephany Asta-Ferrero of Celtic Rain Horse Rescue. Stephany contacted someone at Country Life Farm who bred Yeager's Jet, and they agreed to take him in and also provide temporary stabling for Forty Five who will then be fostered by Celtic Rain in a couple of weeks.
Forty Five was on the Triple Crown trail for Dogwood Stables in 2004!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Exceller Fund Marks 10-Year Anniversary of Saving Horses
April 7, 2007 will mark the 10-year anniversary of the day that the
champion horse, Exceller, met his death at age 23 in a slaughterhouse because his
owner deemed him to be of no value.
The Exceller Fund (www.excellerfund.org) was first formed three months after the
Daily Racing Form's Mike Mullaney broke the news of Exceller's death. A
group of posters on the original Bloodhorse Forum, all racing fans who remembered
Exceller, were debating the merits of Cigar and Skip Away when they
realized that Exceller was probably as good or better, considering his record in the
shadow of superstars such as Seattle Slew, Affirmed, Alydar, Forego, and Spectacular Bid.
These racing fans sought to start something that would achieve at
least two goals: Keep alive the name and memory of Exceller, a horse often
overlooked and forgotten among the decade of superstar champions, and to
try to save other Thoroughbreds from meeting his fate.
Poised on this anniversary marking a decade since his death,
The Exceller Fund supports one of his daughters, Almata, as a retiree.
Just this month, The Exceller Fund also took in Luckymata, the
last foal of Almata, who retired from racing this year. Luckymata
suffered a series of injuries that make it unlikely that he will ever be ridable,
but during his racing career, he set a new course record for 8.5 furlongs, and
won 10 out of 37 races. His connections donated him to The Exceller Fund so
he would have a safe and secure future.
The Exceller Fund is 100% run by volunteers, and the officers and board members
cover normal administrative expenses either out of pocket or by making a
donation. The Exceller Fund has no paid staff, and strives to have as much of its
donations as possible go towards the purchase, transport, board, care, vet
and farrier expenses of the horses. The Exceller Fund's budget last year was
just over $70,000.
As this 10th anniversary approaches, please consider honoring the memory
of Exceller, by making a donation to help The Exceller Fund provide a
Future Beyond the Finish Line (sm) for Thoroughbreds. For
more information, please visit www.excellerfund.org .
