HORSES WE HAVE HELPED
Busted Trust
We received an e-mail from a woman who was writing on behalf of her friend who had taken an injured horse from the track. She asked if there was anything we could do to help. I responded that we might be able to assist with a small portion of the vet expenses, but we needed additional information. I received this e-mail from the owner of the horse, Busted Trust:
I contacted the New Jersey Equine clinic and verified the story. We were able to send $200 (directly to, and payable to the vet clinic) to help out, and we have received the most heartwarming updates and thank you's since! The woman who first wrote sent me this message:
Here is the card we received. This belong to all of YOU since your support makes stories like this possible:
And here is a photo of Busted Trust which I forgot to include in the newsletter that was mailed out:
Cheersto Glory
This is the gelding at Friends of Ferdinand who had the keratoma in his foot and needed surgery. Based on our commitment to send some funds, the vet clinic agreed to do the surgery and allow this small non-profit rescue group some additional time to raise the rest of the money. With surgery a "go", the group was able to raise the rest of the money to pay the costs. The good news is that Cheers is RIDABLE! The group was hoping at best that he would be pasture sound, but his recovery amazing. Sara is so thankful, and she feels that we need to continue to use these funds to help other horses in need. She sent us a check to payback some of what we provided, as well as a most heartfelt Thank You note. Again, this note belongs to all of you since these are not successes that any one person can do:
(Cheers is in this drawing - he's the horse on the right)
Equine Rescue Resource
Last week, an e-mail from Equine Rescue Resource www.equinerescueresource.com circulated among the various individuals and groups involved in rescue. This small non-profit rescue group had seen a group of Thoroughbreds brought into a New Jersey auction. The horses went through the ring at $300 to $500, and were on their way to New Holland, or worse. E-mails and phone calls went flying back and forth. The Exceller Fund sent $500 to help ERR purchase a horse at risk. Using our funds, ERR was able to secure a 12 year old Thoroughbred mare who had been a broodmare. Colleen of ERR e-mailed and told me the name of this mare is Interval. I checked Pedigree Query, and if this is the correct horse - www.pedigreequery.com/interval4, then WOW! How does a classy dame like that end up in place like this? I have asked Colleen to give us more updates on this mare and I eagerly await a photo or two to share with you.
NEW MEMBERS
I don't believe we have had an update on New Members for awhile. This is a process that we need to figure out how to make run more smoothly. I discovered tonight that the EarthLink e-mail list was not updating when I added e-mail addresses to it, so I do not know how many new members have not received updates. For this I offer my deepest apologies! I have just about given up using the EarthLink e-mail list service. It is proving to be more and more unreliable. Since my internet provider will not process an e-mail with more than 20 e-mail addresses (even in the Blind Copy section), I have had to create a "cut and paste" list of all e-mail addresses for members and paste them about 20 at a time to send out e-mails. There has GOT to be a better way!
In any event, with no further delay, here are our newest members:

FUNDRAISING
We are looking for new Fundraising ideas to help us grow. If the slaughter ban is passed, we will see a greater demand for rescue and adoption programs to help with horses that need a little time to find a new home. It appears that we have reached the limit of what we can raise by simply posting messages on Internet forums. eBay auctions alone will not sustain us. So we are exploring some other avenues and will let you know what develops.
I welcome any and all volunteers to help with Fundraising, Grant Writing, etc. Please send an e-mail to mail@excellerfund.org

I am an equine massage therapist at Phila Park and for three years I massaged Busted Trust. His original owner and trainer promised him to me when he retired. Unfortunately, Busted Trust (who has won over $150,000 in his career) got claimed this summer at Monmouth. I went to the new trainer and explained that he was mine (!) and they promised to call me when he was done racing. I followed up with them several times, and finally I got a phone call from them last week. They told me he had run down badly in his last race, but would be okay. I drove to Maryland and picked him up.
I had never seen a run down injury, but my trainer friend assured me that this looked typical. I was worried about it because it seemed quite swollen. My vet came out a few days later to look at him and immediately told me to put him down because his tendon sheath was infected. In all the time I've known him, Busted Trust has always tried his hardest for everyone, so I wasn't about to put him down without giving him a chance. I took him to NJ Equine Center and they operated on him to clear out the infection.
The vet at NJ Equine told me that the wound was older than the trainer had told me and that he had clearly run down before. So apparently they just kept healing it as fast as they could and then running him again until the injury went too deep for them to patch up. The vet is still guarded about his prognosis because of all the adhesions and repeated trauma to the same area of his leg. She is hopeful at this time that we got the infection. She thinks he will be pasture sound and possibly pleasure riding sound.
The vet told me that I should be prepared for a bill of about $4,000 to $5,000. I feel it is worth it to save a horse who is all heart and who earned many times that in his career. However, as a riding instructor and horse masseuse, it will be a big stretch for me to afford. I am planning on raising some money to help cover the costs of his medical expenses by offering massage days and massage clinics at local barns for donations.
Your assistance means a lot to me. In fact, I took this quote, sent to me by a bulletin board friend, with me to the vet hospital when I dropped him off:
"When I am on my deathbed, I imagine I will say, 'Thank God I did that'" - Arthur Hancock, on buying back Gato del Sol from Europe after Exceller was killed in a slaughterhouse in Sweden.
So I think it is fitting that the first one to come to my aid is Exceller himself.

Dear Bonnie:
I don't know if Lisa has emailed recently but Busted Trust is doing better! We are just thrilled! People have been generous and the fund raising continues. Our farm owners, Rebecca and Kevin Belmont are matching donations, which is totally generous as they too are not wealthy. I feel so honored to be with such great and caring people. This journey to help Lisa has been amazing. I've received emails that are so supportive. I must say that when Lisa is ok, this will be my new cause!
I would like to send you a thank you note from the equestrian club (basically the kids) from our barn. I have told everyone I know about the work of the Exceller Fund and you were our first donation! In fact, today I received a donation and then promptly sent a link to your web site to the person donating to Busted Trust. Lisa was so excited when you called the equine clinic to arrange to pay for some of the bill with your donation. It made all of us feel connected to people that truly care about these horses.
Could you please send send me an address to send a card? We will always remember your kindness.
