Dear Exceller Fund members,
This is a very quick update to let you know about the latest that is going on YOUR organization, The Exceller Fund.
TWO NEW HORSES!!!!
Believe it or not, we have two new horses! Both of these horses have been with the dealer since June and he can no longer hold on to them. He feels these are both very nice horses and has offered to let us take both of them now and to pay him when we get the money. These were horses that started out on our Finger Lakes listings, and we've been keeping an eye on them for over 3 months!
Transportation is arranged for Monday for these two geldings to go over to Triple L Stables in New York.
Here is Distant Kid - he's built like a tank!
And here is Robbie - who is by Raffi's Magesty - the same sire as Topper
ANOTHER HORSE WE HAVE HELPED
I received a phone call from Leslie Hubble of TRF asking if we could help out another rescue organization in Colorado that was trying to save 3 skinny Thoroughbreds from being shipped to the Cavel plant for slaughter. TRF offered to take any of the horses that were unsound and/or unadoptable. We have a request form for other organizations to complete when they need assistance, and upon receipt of the request, we sent $500 to Shiloh Acres to help save these horses. When the rescuers were able to look up the tattoos on the horses, they discovered that one of the geldings is Champion Lodge, a stakes horse who won the San Luis Rey Handicap at Santa Anita in 2003 and got third that same year in the San Juan Capistrano.
The trainer of Champion Lodge is Sandy Shulman. The rescuers contacted Mr. Shulman who was shocked to hear about this, but after hearing the tattoo number and seeing a photo, he confirmed it was indeed Champion Lodge. He was quite upset as he had donated the gelding to a school in MAY of THIS YEAR! The school was supposed to provide a home for life. Mr. Shulman is now helping out with the medical expenses for "Champ" and the rescuers say he has been extremely helpful. Without our donation, Champion Lodge may have been lost forever to slaughter.

THINGS I FORGOT IN THE PREVIOUS UPDATE
Okay - there are things I forgot to include in the previous update I sent:
1. GIFFORD'S KID is located in Southern California and is at Teresa Olivarez's farm in Hesperia, California. RIO HOPE, a Thoroughbred mare owned by Teresa Olivarez and Loretta Tarnowski is contributing 25% of her earnings toward's "Adam's" care. RIO HOPE is a great-grandaughter of Exceller. I just found out from Teresa that RIO HOPE has just been retired. She retires sound and happy, and she earned a paycheck every time she ran. Thank you RIO for helping take care of your "brethren" in racing.
2. SLEW SIX is also located in Southern California - near San Diego. Howard is looking into ideas for finding new homes and alternatives for Thoroughbreds in Southern California.
FAIRMOUNT PARK PADDOCK SALE
It is with great sadness that I report we will not be able to do anything at the Fairmount Park Paddock Sale this year. I had committeed to Keely Morgan of CANTER Southern Illinois that we would be "good" for one horse. However, some well intentioned people had contacted a reporter in the area and apparently told him that the track was holding a sale for "killer" buyers. The unfortunate part is that while some horses in the past have sold to kill buyers, the majority of the horses went to private buyers, and in the last 3 years, with CANTER's involvement, no horses have been sold to kill buyers. However, the reporter apparently turned up some media attention on the sale that has put Keely in a very awkward situation.
For various reasons from this, she cannot attend the sale, and we have no one else who can be at the sale on Saturday, September 23rd. It is possible that Keely can contact trainers after the sale for any horses that didn't sell, but it's a longshot at best that we will be able to do anything.

MEMBER CONTEST AND CHALLENGE!!!!
With these last two horses, we are more than at an all time high for the number of horses we are helping - we are in a negative cash flow! I would like to put a challenge out to all of our members. If each member can get ONE friend or a family member to send in TEN DOLLARS, we would receive over $1,000! For each member that gets a friend to send in at least $10, I will send a 4x6 confirmation photo of Exceller to you or anyone of your choosing.
I have attached a form that you can give to your friends to fill in your name when they send in their donation. The member who generates the largest amount of donations will receive their choice of:
A copy of William H. P. Robertson's classic book The History of Thoroughbred Racing In America (good condition - no dust jacket)
OR
A copy of J.K.M. Ross's book Boots and Saddles which chronicles the stable of his father Commander Ross, owner of Sir Barton, Billy Kelly, and other notable racehorses from the early 20th century.
Both books have an excellent number of photographs of some very great horses as well as wonderful stories of the horses and people that make up the great history of the Sport of Kings.
We will continue to save up for Sully's surgery and have received some wonderful offers of support. I will let you know when Sully will be scheduled for surgery and keep you updated on his progress.
