COOPERATIVE EFFORTS
In the past couple of months, we have worked with CANTER Southern Illinois on their gelding Time to Time, and we have helped out Friends of Ferdinand with the surgery needed for Cheersto Glory.
Recently we have assisted with the rescue of 3 Thoroughbreds in a feedlot in Colorado. This is a very cooperative and collaborative effort involving Shiloh Acres Horse Rescue, SAFE, Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation and The Exceller Fund. We were asked if we could contribute funds to help secure all 3 Thoroughbreds who would otherwise be shipped to slaughter in a couple of days. TRF said they would provide a retirement home if needed, so we sent $500 to help make sure these guys would be safe.
Upon review of the tattoos, it was discovered that one of the "beat up" Thoroughbreds is 9 year old gelding by the name of Champion Lodge. 3 years ago, Champion Lodge WON the San Luis Rey Handicap at Santa Anita and then took 3rd place in the San Juan Capistrano Handicap. He had been a champion horse in Europe as well. His former trainer was contacted. Sandy Shulman was shocked to hear where his champion had ended up. He thought he had found a forever home with a local school. He is sending money to pay for Lodge's expenses and will provide a retirement home for him. You can see photos and read more about it on the Thoroughbred Champions Round Table Message Board:

FINGER LAKES LISTINGS
The Finger Lakes Trainer Listings are being turned over to the Finger Lakes Track Adoption Program. Gaye McCullough is now a volunteer with FLTAP. That organization is now 2 years old and will now have the adoption program and trainer listings all under "one roof." The Exceller Fund gave the program an excellent start since over 140 horses found private homes through the listing services maintained by The Exceller Fund over the last 2 years. We wish the FLTAP continued success in finding new careers for Thoroughbreds.
OTHER LISTINGS
With the lessons learned and experienced gained from the Finger Lakes listings, we are now moving forward with a couple of tracks where there is no program such as CANTER, LOPE, or an on-site program. We have some folks who work on the backstretch at a couple of tracks that have volunteered to take photos and information for a few trainers that would like to list their horses for sale. These are tracks that have resisted all formal rescue efforts, so we are going slowly and working with just a few trainers at a time. Our hope is that if some trainers start selling horses for more money that the meat buyer offers, other trainers will want to list their horses.
Darlene Robinette is heading up the listing services, so any volunteers would coordinate efforts with her.
FAIRMOUNT PARK PADDOCK SALE
For the past 2 years, The Exceller Fund has participated in rescue efforts at the Fairmount Park Paddock Sale in Southern Illinois. CANTER usually does the "legwork" and purchases Thoroughbreds at risk of being sold to a meat buyer. This year, CANTER Southern Illinois is tapped out financially and physically and is not able to purchase any horses for their program. The Exceller Fund is hoping we can purchase at least ONE at-risk Thoroughbred for either retirement or adoption. We may be able to work with another organization to make this happen, but details are still being worked out. The Paddock Sale is next Saturday, September 23rd.
