Hello Members!
Well, as usual January (and February!) has sped by and it’s March already! I am another year older now and the gray hair is coming in more than ever! We had some great success stories in January and February that we would like to share with you. First, I would like to thank Marci Iverson for keeping track for me. Marci was quite prompt in sending me this Update to review, and what can I say, I got buried in stuff in February. The rest of the Board will be helping review our updates as our goal is to get these out to our members twice a month.
RICH IN DALLAS
Meet Rich In Dallas on Saturday at 2:00pm in the Youth Pavilion Presentation Ring! The Exceller Fund’s celebrity, Rich In Dallas, who appeared as one of the horses portaying Seabiscuit, is scheduled to be the Celebrity Horse at the Ohio Equine Affaire, April 6 - 9, 2006!!
Paul and Kelly Linn Of ReRun will take Dallas to the show where he will be the featured celebrity equine at the Breyer Youth Pavillion. We have a link to this news on our Home Page, and you can read about his schedule appearance on the Equine Affaire's website at www.equineaffaire.com/ohio/features/youth_pavilion/yp_main.html
This is quite an honor and a wonderful opportunity for The Exceller Fund! The Exceller Fund will be given an exhibitor's table next to Dallas' stall where we can display information about The Exceller Fund for donations, membership, fundraising, etc. I am planning to be there for the 4 days, and welcome any Exceller Fund member who would like to volunteer for a couple of hours on any of those 4 days.
I will forward a Volunteer Opportunity e-mail that I received from Equine Affaire.
FINGERLAKES TRACK BULLETIN BOARD TRAINER LISTINGS
You all probably know by now that The Exceller Fund has a bulletin board that we operate to aid the trainers at the Fingerlakes Track in New York in finding homes for their retired race horses. Here is a link to this page: exforg.proboards32.com/index.cgi
it is our mission to help these trainers find homes for these horses before they are faced with the decision of having to send them to auction and possibly to slaughter.
In January we received the great news that a woman had purchased two of the horses on the Exceller Fund Fingerlakes Bulletin Board – these two horses are Captain Spaulding and Karakorum Conquest. That brings our total to 123 horses that have found good homes due to this site!
We would like to give a special thank you to Gaye, Nel, and Darlene – 3 great women who help us with this effort by regularly visiting the track and helping with pictures and posting the trainer listings. I also need to correct the spelling of Nel’s last name that I gave in an earlier update. Nel’s last name is Rutishauser (not Rutis!)
Gaye McCullough makes this announcement:
I would like to introduce you to our two newest Finger Lakes Volunteers. I know you all will be as pleased as I am to welcome them.
Bev Higgins will be working with us from her home. She will be helping to keep our listings updated, lending creative energy to any flyers and posters that we may decide to create, and, in general, helping us in any way that we can think of. She's a long-time horsewoman, and will lend us her knowledge and compassion.
Lisa Gates is going to be working the backside with us. We haven't worked out a schedule yet, but are hoping to be seeing her every other week. Right now, she is also helping the group by calling trainers to update our current listings. Lisa has also had horses for a long time, and I'm hoping that a few weeks of trekking around the backside won't scare her away ;-D
It is so nice to see our group growing. We really need the help, as more and more trainers and owners are coming to see that the Exceller Fund BB offers a viable alternative in the placement of their retiring racehorses. Bev and Lisa should be able to help us grow even more this year.
GLO MOST HOT
Glo Most Hot, the mare that we got from the Fairmount Park Paddock Sale with assistance from CANTER Southern Illinois has been accepted into the Makers Mark Secretariat Center run by the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation and located at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington Kentucky. Glo Most Hot stayed with Tim Armstrong after she came off the track and was hanging out with Ton of Gold and Prospector’s Sally for a couple of months. Glo is sound, and Tim thinks she would be good as a recreational Polo horse, so we think she should do well at the Secretariat Center.
MISSY WON
Missy Won, an Exceller horse who is currently at the Makers Mark Secretariat Center at the Kentucky Horse park in Lexington Kentucky has had some people interested in her, but we do not have any applications for her adoption just yet. Nicole Smith, who coordinates adoptions from the Secretariat Center thinks that interest will pick up over the next couple of weeks now that the holidays are over.

Wild Will’s Wish
This was the 12 year old dressage trained gelding we helped CANTER retire from racing in 2004. We got a nice photo and note from the Adoptive Owner of Wild Will’s Wish:
OUR HORSES AT EPONA
We received this update from Ron Levesque on the above horses that we have with EPONA.
Here are some long awaited photos of the Exceller kids. We finally got some decent weather to get photos with the kids blankets off. We will try and do a better job at getting more photos for you on a more consistent basis. Lately should be evaluated this year as he has not been evaluated for two years. We have someone that has expressed an interest in covering the cost of the exam including x-rays. He is doing ok, but he is still significantly lame and may always be that way. But as you will be able to tell from the photos it does not stop him any. He is such a classic tragedy of the racing industry. He is a brilliant horse both intellectually and physically. He has a great mind and needs a job, but his physical limitations at this point in time prohibit him from having one. Let me know if it is OK to follow through with the evaluation as long as the sponsor is still willing to cover the cost. Unexpected Miracle continues to be his same sweet self. He, Blessed and Sal enjoy their days together. Lucky and Iceman continue to do well too. Lucky has been experiencing more lameness this winter, so we have increased his Adequan to shots per month and he gets a weekly massage from Robin who donates her time and has taken on Lucky as her special project at no cost. The massages appear to be working. And the combination is having a positive effect on him. He has gotten back to an occasional gallop around the field with his blind companion Iceman.

DUES
Please don't forget to send in your dues for March. Some members have fallen a couple of months behind, and we really, really, really, need those regular donations as we depend on them to pay our regular expenses. We are still low in funding after paying for the colic surgery, plus we had some vet bills for our horses at ReRun that we need to pay, and we also had some LARGE transportation expenses in 2005. We are slowly starting to recover, but we need to raise at least $5,000 more to get back on solid footing. We must have a cushion of funds to pay for unexpected expenses we might have for our current horses. When our funding level gets too low, we are not able to take in any new horses. We are hopeful to be able to take in a new horse this month, but it will depend on how much money we have. We have already been receiving requests for help from owners and former owners to help retire some hard trying old-timers out there.
You can pay ahead of time for any number of months up through the end of the year. There are several ways that you can make your monthly donation:
· Checks (address is below)
· Credit Card donation through our Gift Shop excellerfund.org/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=SFNT&Store_Code=E
· Credit Card - automatic deduction - send an e-mail to Karla Phanuef at britadog@aol.com for instructions.
· PayPal - The PayPal address is donate@excellerfund.org
· CheckFree - This is an On-line bill payment service. Many companies now use CheckFree for customers that want to make their bill payment online. The website for CheckFree is mycheckfree.com/br22/wps?rq=bfbl&sp=10001&esc=93096239
· American Express now offers card holders the opportunity to donate using their American Express card and earn Reward Points at the same time: www124.americanexpress.com/cards/loyalty.do?page=donateonline
If you pay by check, please make them payable to The Exceller Fund, Inc. and mailed to:
